About the role

We're looking for a talented and motivated leader to join our Visitor Experiences Group as Manager - Venues and Events.

Based across the War Memorial Centre, Royal Whanganui Opera House, and Cooks Gardens Events Centre, you'll lead a team of venue and technical professionals delivering everything from major concerts and festivals to community celebrations. This is a pivotal role - balancing strategic growth with hands-on operational delivery. You'll have the chance to shape unforgettable event experiences while growing Whanganui's reputation as a destination.

You'll report to the Manager Visitor Experiences and be a key part of the wider Customer Experiences Group.

What you'll bring

  • Proven experience managing venue or event operations at a senior level
  • Strong leadership and people management skills in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent organisational, financial, and logistical management ability
  • Stakeholder relationship management skills across diverse and complex networks
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence and present with impact
  • A relevant tertiary qualification (e.g. Diploma of Management or similar) or equivalent experience

Desirable:

  • Event Management or related qualification
  • Experience in the events, arts, hospitality, or entertainment industry
  • Local government or public sector experience
  • Knowledge of Te Ao Māori and tikanga
  • Asset and facilities management experience
