Roading Transport Engineer
We are seeking an experienced traffic engineering professional to lead Council's traffic services function and drive safety, connectivity, and performance across Whanganui's transport network.
As our subject matter expert, you will manage contracts for streetlighting, traffic signals, line marking, and traffic services works, coordinating with the Wellington Transport Operations Centre and overseeing internal SCADA and weather monitoring operations. You will research and analyse traffic safety data to identify hazards and programme improvements, prepare design recommendations for key stakeholders, and drive the development of multimodal transport infrastructure — including the Mountains to Sea Trail, public transport, and walking and cycling networks.
To be successful in this role, you'll be someone who has:
- Minimum five years' experience in a traffic engineering or traffic services environment, including contract management in local government or a comparable setting
- NZS 3910 Engineer's Representative (ER) competency and a TTM Planner or TTM Auditor qualification, or strong working knowledge of the NZ Guide to Temporary Traffic Management
- A proven track record in managing maintenance contracts across services such as signals, streetlighting, active transport and TTM providers
- Strong stakeholder relationship skills, including experience working with utility providers, developers, iwi and hapū, and community groups
- A confident, constructive approach to problem-solving and driving continuous improvement
- A current full NZ driver's licence
Most importantly, you will be technically sharp, collaborative, and genuinely motivated to deliver transport outcomes that make a difference to the Whanganui community every day.
